I was born into the Green Tea business in Nagasaki; Japan’s only international trade port for over 200 years until the 19 th century, and a historic melting pot of world culture. The lingering atmosphere of internationalism in Nagasaki has strongly influenced who I am today.

It’s said Green Tea was introduced to Japan in the 9th century, and that new methods of enjoying it were created by Japanese innovators once every 400 years. However, I feel that this cycle of innovation has grown stagnant due to a transition to more modern lifestyles both in and outside of Japan and fear that it may disappear if nothing is done. It was this fear that motivated me to create Matcha Ice Cream in 1993, Matcha Mochi Ice Cream in 1998, and the Matcha Latte in 1999 in Southern California.

I founded Maeda-en in the USA in 1984 and ever since we have been a pioneer in the Green Tea industry by continuously inventing new ways to enjoy Matcha. We have happily introduced traditional and newly innovated ways to enjoy Matcha Green Tea to over 40 countries around the world so far.

I feel very strongly that it is our responsibility to grow Green Tea’s ever lasting value. Creating new styles of enjoying Green Tea in order to ensure that the tradition of innovation continues on into the next 400 years is our mission.
