Recently a (Matcha/Green Tea) Boom has been taking the globe by storm and Japanese Green Teas in particular have become the “go-to” Green Tea for both quality and flavor!
In Japan Green Tea has enjoyed a history spanning hundreds of years for a good reason! Green Tea is good for both your mind and body and SNS sites also have gone so far as to put Matcha Green Tea as #1 on lists of “Stress-Relieving Foods and Beverages”.
Worldwide Green Tea production is roughly 5,000,000 tons per year and Japanese Green Tea is just 1.6% of total production making Japan #10 on the list of Green Tea producing countries. Japanese Green Tea is said to be the most flavorful and delicious type of Green Tea which makes the limited amount produced each year even more valuable. Lately Japan has started to introduce Organic teas to meet the growing global demand. However presently only 5% of Japan’s Green Tea production is certified as Organic. To bring it into perspective Japanese Organic teas are just 0.1% of the Green Tea produced Globally each year. This combined with the already delicious flavor of Japanese Green Teas makes it the “jewel in the crown” of Green Teas!

We have visited the Organic tea growing regions of Japan and asked farmers what it takes to grow their delicious Organic Green Teas. Their farms are located deep in the wilds of remote mountain ranges in places so primordial that you will feel as if you were one of, if not the last, humans on Earth. Why would farmers go out of their way to choose such remote locations? This is purely to avoid the possibility of any contamination with pesticides and other chemicals used in regular commercial agriculture. These Organic Green Tea Farms are purposely located to not just avoid contamination through the soil but also contamination from particles that could be carried off by the wind, called “drift”. To ensure quality Organic Green Tea production the Tea Farms must put in about 1.5 times the effort than required for a normal tea farm which makes the growing process even more physically demanding. In addition, there is also a strict and costly certification process that farmers must adhere to in order to have their Green Teas be Certified Organic. Due to the intensive physical and monetary strain, it wasn’t until about 5-6 years ago that farmers could regularly supply high quality, reasonably priced Organic Green Teas. Due to an extreme difficulty in procuring a stable supply of these high quality Organic Green Teas, Maeda-en has not been able to offer Organic options to our customers. . . until now!
